Alonzo Mourning, a former Miami Heat player and NBA champion, is a world-renowned center known for his dominant skills. He is considered one of the greatest players in league history and has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
While most known for his strength and towering presence on the basketball court for close to two decades as an NBA player; Alonzo now serves as Vice President of Player Programs and Development for the Miami Heat. Alonzo is a highly sought-after motivational speaker; an Affordable Housing Developer, and a business mogul with a multitude of partnership deals within the technology and healthcare industries.
Alonzo is passionate about helping others to overcome challenges and giving them a chance to win in life. As the Founder of the Mourning Family Foundation (formerly Alonzo Mourning Charities) and the Overtown Youth Center, or OYC Miami, Alonzo has raised over $60 million to support social, educational, health, and economic advancement programs and initiatives to advance the socio-economic trajectory for those residing in marginalized communities in an effort to curtail generational cycles of poverty.
For the past 25 years, Alonzo has been considered one of the most influential and iconic philanthropic sports celebrities in all of South Florida due to his commitment to the community. His passion for service is an integral part of who he is. Determined to ensure that underserved children and families in our community have access to critical services that lead to a pathway of success, Alonzo spearheaded a $22 million capital campaign at OYC Miami. The funds raised were used to redesign the OYC Miami center; resulting in a now completed state-of-the-art facility. This center stands as a beacon of Alonzo’s unrelenting focus on helping those in need, serving 5000 children, families, and adults in the community.
Because of the many sacrifices and contributions made to positively impact his own life; Alonzo is steadfastly and forever committed to making personal sacrifices for others. Alonzo contributes much of his success to his biological family, his foster mother, Mrs. Fannie Threet, his coach John Thompson, and his cousin, Jason Cooper, for donating his kidney after being diagnosed with Focal Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a life-threatening, rare genetic kidney disease.
While he does not like the recognition, Alonzo has received numerous awards for his service including the Sapphire Award from the Florida Blue Foundation; The Children’s Trust Excellence Award for Public Policy; the NBA’s Community Assist Award; the National Urban League’s Outstanding Community Service Award and many others. As well as Miami-Dade County School Board named a school in his honor, the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School, which acknowledges his deep and unrelenting commitment to our society.
Alonzo holds a Sociology degree from Georgetown University and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and is also a loving father to Trey, Myka, and Alijah.
